Monday Mentor Minutes-Katie Paulen

Spartan Katie Paulen,a former Alumni Career Services Assistant for the Alumni Association, shares her experiences as a Human Resources Generalist at Wolverine Worldwide located in Big Rapids, Michigan.
katie-paulen-photoKatie originally entered Michigan State as a Political Theory major in James Madison and  planned to attend Law School. After her first year, she decided Law School was not for her and decided to switch her major to Business Management, graduating with a BA in 2008. Katie continued her journey as a Spartan to graduate with a Masters in Human Resources and Labor Relations in 2010. Her undergraduate experience working for the Alumni Career Services and her internship at Shell Oil Company while completing her graduate degree are two experiences Katie found to be most beneficial to her future career, and encourages her fellow Spartans-especially young professionals- to seek these types of opportunities while at Michigan State.

Upon leaving Michigan State, she began her first entry-level HR role at Federal Mogul Powertrain, a leading supplier for the 3 top automotive companies and situated in Greenville, Michigan. Here, she was able to develop her labor relations skills and eventually worked her way up to become the HR Manager.

3 years later she was offered a similar HR position at Wolverine Worldwide, but here she is working to advance popular brands of footwear instead of the manufacturing of enginer components. Katie’s favorite part of her job is never having one day exactly like the next. She could be dealing with labor disputes one day, and recruiting, training, and writing a new policy the next. She also says her work in the manufacturing facility also contributes to her unique work week.
